During the First World War some karst caves were used by Austro-Hungarian soldiers such as military shelter and adapted to war purposes through the execution of internal works such as, for example, the reinforcement of the vaults, the creation of ventilation systems and artificial entrances to be used as possible escape route.
Officer Hermann Bock, the head of the military engineering company responsible for adapting the karst caves as a shelter for the troops, he wrote the manual "Der Kavernenbau", published by the 5th Army Austro-Hungarian, which collects the experiences made by giving all kinds of provisions for the excavation works and adaptation of caves.
